Please join with the Pueblo Community College Foundation in recognizing the following scholarship donors and learn more about what they are offering to the students who are enrolled at Pueblo Community College (in Pueblo, Canon City, Durango and/or Mancos/Cortez).
ANNE FARLEY
Kathy Farley was one of Pueblo’s leading citizens and she believed in the power of higher education for women. As such, she funded scholarships for all Puebloans who are committed to enhancing their station in life and dedicated this scholarship in honor of her daughter Anne.
Kathy fell in love with Pueblo and fostered inclusiveness and championed the cultural and economic development of her treasured city. She became an activist for change, serving on many foundations, commissions, and boards to get things done. With Pat Kelly and John E. Hill at her side, she worked diligently to establish Pueblo’s Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center. As its first chairperson, she helped handpick a core group with the likes of Sandy Stein and Maggie Divelbiss. Together they broke ground to build and sustain what has become the cultural heart of Southern Colorado.
Throughout her life, Kathy trailblazed a path for women and the people of Southern Colorado with a string of firsts: first Puebloan asked to join the Colorado Women’s Forum and later served as its president, first Southern Coloradoan to lead the Colorado State Parks Board, first woman to serve as a Pueblo County Commissioner, and the first executive director of the Southern Colorado Community Foundation.
For six decades, Kathy was unselfish with her time and gave generously. She continually did small things to make grand things possible. Together with her fellow Pueblo Conservancy District directors Pat Kelly and Gus Sandstrom, Kathy moved water, hearts, and minds to establish the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk Project and was instrumental in the development of Pueblo’s beautiful and inspirational Riverwalk. As one of her proudest achievements, Kathy fondly remarked, “It’s something that everyone can enjoy.”
ART GONZALES INDUSTRIAL ARTS
Art Gonzalez (June 15 – January 30, 2020) was born in Pueblo and graduated from Central High School. He attended Midwest Business College. Following four years in the Navy, Art returned to work at the Pueblo Flour Mill until it closed in 1956. After working for several plumbing and sheet metal companies, Art partnered with Puebloan Sam Brown to open Mountain States Sheet Metal Company in 1966. The company was tremendously successful. Both Art and Sam Brown became some of Pueblo’s greatest philanthropists, giving predominantly to the arts and educational institutions and programs. Art credited his success to the strong work ethic he learned from his father. He lived by the motto “Your word is your bond”.

BUZZ ELIAS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
As a young adult L.W. “Buzz” Elias pursued college studies, first at Pueblo Junior College, then at the University of Denver. During this time he obtained his pilot’s license and soon enlisted and took training as a Naval aviator. During World War II he trained pilots, and it was then he met his future wife, a Navy nurse, Jean Armstrong. They started a family, and he began working with the stock exchange in New York City. The big city lifestyle was hard, and with a small family, he struggled to find work; he hadn’t finished his journalism degree. They relocated to Denver, where he worked in sales, and eventually was able to buy a grocery brokerage business. He became a very successful businessman. He continued flying in private planes for many years. He also was a freelance writer for magazines and for the Pueblo Chieftain.
Inspired by his own experiences, Buzz wanted to help the nontraditional student find a satisfying career in the community by way of education here at Pueblo Community College. Understanding how hard it can be to raise a family while studying for a career, he hoped to help numerous people through his endowment-funded scholarships.
