PUEBLO COMMUNITY College has made a priority of developing programs that build the local workforce.
In 2007, the institution launched its fleet of mobile worker-training labs. They allow skilled-labor instructors to take welding, mechanical systems, electrical systems and manufacturing education on the road. In the rolling classrooms’ seven-year history, they have provided more than 3,000 employee students with more than 2,600 class sessions.
That innovation is now being recognized at a national level.
The college has been named one of 10 national finalists for the Workforce Development category of the Bellweather Award. An offering of the Community Colleges Futures Assembly through the University of Florida Institute of Higher Education, the award recognizes innovation and excellence among community colleges.
Ten colleges were selected as finalists in each category, which also include Instructional Programs and Services, and Planning, Governance and Finance, according to the University of Florida’s Bellweather Award website.
“I am extremely humbled to think that our work here at Pueblo Community College is being recognized on a national level,” college President Patty Erjavec said in a statement. “The faculty and staff have worked hard to raise the bar and their outstanding efforts are paying off.”
President Erjavec will make a presentation about the program to the Futures Assembly on Jan. 26. She will be joined by Amanda Corum, the director of the school’s Economic and Workforce Division, and Jenny Sherman, the dean of the Business and Advanced Technology program. Each of the finalists will be honored and the final winners announced at a luncheon the following day.
We are confident Pueblo will be well represented during the conference and are proud of our local institution’s success.
We also thank the college for its very visible commitment to developing the knowledge and talents of our critical skilled workers. Regardless of the final Bellweather Award recipient, PCC’s programming has made Pueblo the true winner. –
